In ancient times, when Pandora was still a young and wild world, the Na’vi lived in fear of the sky. For above, reigned the Toruk, the Last Shadow.
When its fiery wings crossed the sun, the light vanished, and all it touched fled or perished. Its sharp crest cut through the air, its talons seized life, and its voice resounded like Eywa’s wrath.
The clans would say: “When your shadow is that of the Toruk, your final breath is near.” Thus it earned its name: Toruk, the Last Shadow.
But Eywa, the Great Mother, had placed in it not only the power to kill, but also the power to guide. For it is said that in times of great peril, a Na’vi of immense courage and heart could bind their spirit to that of the Toruk.
Then, they would no longer be just a hunter, but a sign. A sign that Eywa calls her children to unite.
He who rides the Toruk becomes Toruk Makto — he who commands the shadow of the sky. Few succeeded, but each rallied the clans and changed the fate of Pandora.
The Toruk is thus two things: the end and the beginning. Death, but also hope. Fear, yet wisdom. It is dangerous, yet within it lives the greatness of Eywa.
